ENCAUSTIC

There is something so luscious about encaustic, it makes me want to run my fingers over the surface and feel its cool, smooth response. Encaustic is a centuries-old process of painting with a mixture of beeswax and fir tree sap, that I colorize with oil paint, in a melted form. In my opinion, encaustic is the perfect medium; it encompasses all the juicy parts of the arts I love most with gorgeous colors and textures, carving opportunities, layering, and so much more. This living, breathing medium enables the perfect expression of my Shellscapes series. More»

“Erin Rigney’s ‘Shellscapes’ capture the movement of the ocean, and the ethereal nature of the sky in gorgeous colors and textures. The use of encaustic medium is masterful, with blues that taunt the atmosphere, and horizons that inspire the dreamer. Her use of color enables the pieces to change with each phase of light.”
